Who was Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro:
Rafael Augusto Prostes Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905), was an artist, whose vast work is spread by books and publications. He was a graphic designer, watercolor artist, illustrator, decorator, political and social cartoonist, journalist, ceramist and teacher. His name is closely linked to the Portuguese caricature, which he gave a great boost, giving it a style of its own. He is the author of the popular representation of “Zé Povinho“, who became a symbol of the Portuguese people.
Born into a family of artists, he began by trying to make his living as a plastic artist with realistic compositions and watercolors inspired by costumes and popular types. In 1871 received a prize in the International Exhibition of Madrid. At the same time he developed his facet of caricaturist, illustrator and decorator.
In 1981, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro cast in ceramics some copies of swallows, which still remain suspended in the roof of Tabacaria Monaco, in Rossio, Lisbon. He also designed them in plates, ornaments and tiles. The popular handicrafts have appropriated his swallows and popularized their use to decorate facades, balconies and home interiors throughout the country.
His experimental work with clay led him to start producing artistic crockery in the Faience Factory of Caldas da Rainha in 1885.
