Who was Almada Negreiros:
José Sobral de Almada Negreiros (1893-1970), was born in the former Portuguese colony of São Tomé and Príncipe. He was a Portuguese multidisciplinary artist who dedicated himself mainly to the plastic arts and writing, occupying a central position in the first generation of Portuguese modernists.
Almada Negreiros is a unique figure in the Portuguese artistic panorama of the 20th century. The notoriety he acquired at the beginning of his career is above all with writing, interventional or literary. Almada Negreiros played a particularly active role in the first modernist avant-garde.
Over his life he worked in an enormous diversity of areas and means of expression – drawing and painting, essay, novel, poetry, dramaturgy and even ballet. The forcefulness of his early interventions gave him a more lyrical and constructive attitude that paved the way for his plastic and literary work of maturity.
The set of panels in Gare Marítima da Rocha do Conde de Óbidos, is considered by many to be the best Portuguese murals, is significant in an involuntary dilution of the boundaries between painting and illustration. These panels together, summarize their prior plastic activity. The Portrait of Fernando Pessoa, 1954 (of which he made a second version, symmetrical in 1964), is another of his most significant works.
